Book cover design for Ray Bradbury’s The Veldt.

My task for this project was to design a book cover for The Veldt, a 1950 science fiction story by Ray Bradbury, in which lions in a simulated African grassland ultimately cause physical harm in the real world.

Through my book cover design, I aimed to convey the blurred line between fantasy and reality that is explored in the story. I wanted the cover to look like it had been clawed through by these "simulated" animals.

I kept the design simple, using a solid color, to keep the visual focus on the rip, and chose the salmon color in part because it's reminiscent of the sunset that's referenced in the story, but especially because I felt that a relatively happy and non-menacing color would create an eerie juxtaposition with the violence implied by the claw marks.
